Coach azhar phillips talks about rugby
Girl Power Rugby Academy, soon to be the first southern suburbs under-18, all girls, contact rugby is just evidence of the fast rate in which this sport is growing. Gratefully I grew up with tag rugby in junior school and stemming to touch rugby in middle to high school, it helped me learn the fundamentals of ball skills, the key skills to become a good team leader but most importantly it taught me new things about myself as an individual.
To have this opportunity among the fast-growing community of individuals still learning and accepting themselves, contact rugby has helped my mental and emotional wellbeing more than I had expected. You do not just become a team, but a family with older sisters that support you and younger sisters that admire your hard work and bravery.
Learning in this sport has helped me tremendously, by integrating the younger community it can help young girls build their confidence and self-esteem, which can be beneficial both on and off the field. This academy will be helping the promotion of diversity and inclusion within the rugby industry, by welcoming players from different backgrounds and abilities.
This academy is the new platform for creating a pipeline of talent, by providing opportunities for young girls to participate, it automatically helps develop a strong talent pool of women rugby players who can go on to play at higher levels, such as provincial or even international levels. By developing these young talents, it helps create role models for other young women and helping to inspire the next generation of female rugby players.
